Throughout my childhood, my parents believed I should be raised they way each of them were-with the correct morals, manners, and respect. Since I was little, my parents have always been my support system, and have pushed me to always reach for my dreams. I have been taught so many ideas, some are the differences between right and wrong, that "lying only lets you get away with something for the moment", and that family will always be there for you-no matter what.
Many of the actions that a child may do is usually blamed on the parents, which I agree on. The parents of any child, like mine, should be on top of their kids and making sure they are following the correct trail. Many children need parental guidance along the way because its bound that they won't make it themselves. A child is a representation of their parent, and for the rep of both the child and the parent, it is better off that a parent becomes more of a role model and also a friend.
Teachers or friends will never teach a child the correct moral education; its what comes from the home that will teach a kid the truth.

The Story of an Hour- Study Questions
1. The story says Mrs. Mallard “had loved him [her husband]–sometimes. Often she did not.” If she was “often” not in love with him, why did she marry him?
Ms. Mallard married her husband because it may have been that her marriage was arranged for her. During the 1800's, many marriages were set up for the newlyweds, and most of the time many wives did not meet their husbands until the day of their wedding.
2. What was life like for Mrs. Mallard in the home of Brently Mallard?
Ms. Mallard's life in the home of Brently Mallard was very hard for her to live. With her quotes of "FREE, free" tells the reader that she was under a lot of stress under her husband's rule. She may have been living as a house-wife where chores and fulfilling his needs could be very overwhelming.
3. In the report of the train accident, Brently Mallard's name was at the top of the list of fatalities (Paragraph 2). Does this information mean that Mallard was an important citizen in his community? Does it also suggest that perhaps Louise married him, in part, because of his standing in the community?
Because Brently's name was at the top of the fatality list does not neccesarily mean that he was an important figure to his community. The list could have been put together alphabetically. On the other hand, if it was created to show the upper-class first, it could be a possibility that Louise married her husband for his money so she can be finacially stable.
4. Do you believe Brently Mallard mistreated his wife? In answering this question, keep in mind the following: (1) In Paragraph 13, Louise Mallard recalls that Brently was kind and that "he had never looked save with love upon her." (2) However, Paragraph 8 had previously informed the reader that Mrs. Mallard's face "bespoke repression," and Paragraph 14 says Brently had a "powerful will bending her."
I don't believe Mr. Mallard mistreated his wife in a physical aspect, but maybe emotionally by controling her actions and making sure she is abiding to his every wish.
5. How much of Mrs. Mallard's apparent unhappiness in her marriage was her own fault?
Part of Ms. Mallard's unhappiness may be her fault, but all in all, it is her marriage. Trying to please her husband, and failing over and over again may be what is really killing her.
6. After Mrs. Mallard receives news that her husband died in a train accident, she goes to “her room.” Do these two words mean that she slept separately from her husband? Does the fact that no children are named in the story indeed indicate that she and her husband slept apart?
No, the term "her room" may just be the way the author wrote it, not so much intentionally. But now that her husband is "dead", she may refer to her to it as her own room.
7. Research the life of Kate Chopin (1851-1904). Then decide whether the death of her husband in 1882 influenced her when she wrote “The Story of an Hour,” published in 1894 in Vogue magazine.
Kate's depression in her real marriage, I think, is revealed throughout "The Story of an Hour." Her real husband had left her in debt, and after his death she had "flirted outrageously" with other men. With the death of Brently in "Story of an Hour", she becomes very conceled to herself, and as the reader you can't see Louise going to flirt with another man.

Differences Between Marriages- Past and Present
Although marriages may be defined as “the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc” according to dictionary.com, the definition may be a bit altered now. Marriages in today’s age are much different from those of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many vows presented in the 1800’s were stated that the wife were to “Obey, Honor, and Respect” as the control of a woman is replaced from her father to her husband. With these vows, a woman would always be dependent on her husband, and coincidently there was no divorce rate. Many wives were to be a so called house-wife, to clean, cook, and fulfill their husband’s needs, work outside of the home was not necessary. In certain religions and races, some marriages may have been arranged, in which the wives do not meet their husbands until the day of their wedding.
Although, in the past, inter-racial and homosexual marriages were not accepted, at all, society has allowed for both to occur. Aside from those two examples, marriages presently have allowed for the woman to be employed, sometimes being paid higher that a man, as well as being able to have the same career as a man such as a lawyer, or doctor. With the woman and man both being part of the work place, it puts a very large strain upon the marriage, which has caused the divorce rate to sky-rocket.

1. How is the domino effect affecting the global economy?-The domino effect is affecting the global economy because as one event triggers another event, and that event causes another one, it causes a ripple of movement-like a row of falling dominos.
2. What caused the U.S. housing crisis?
-The U.S. housing crisis was caused by lenders giving high-risk loans to people with low incomes. People could not pay back their loans. Then home prices fell. With homes worth less, some borrowers could not sell their homes to pay their loans.
3. Why is the cut in consumer spending a serious problems?
-The cut in consumer spending is a serious problem because with fewer jobs and less income, consumers have cut spending. Consumers account for more than two-thirds of the nation's total economic activity.
4. How is less spending affecting local and state governments?
-Less spending has caused a drop in sals tax revenue. Local and stategovernments are cutting programs. More than half of the 50 states have cut spending, raised taxes, or used emergency funds to balance their budgets.
5. What trend does expert Brian Sack predeict for the economy?
-Brian Sack predicted that we are going to be caught in a recession and that its going to be rough in 2009 and 2010.
6. What has the world's key central banks done to stop the crash?
The world's key banks have stopped lending to each other. For example, Britian was forced to rescue many of its banks, spending $865 billion and Iceland took control of its largest bank.

What I knew before I read:

I want to know why the first building in Little Rock burned down in 2005. Also I want to learn how the Barbados chapter of the society survived.

Texting Article

What I knew before I read:
Before I read the article, "Doctors Warn Texters: Don't Text and Walk, Bike, Cook, or Drive" I knew that texting was the "new[er]" technology of today's generation, and that A LOT of people have it on their cell phone plans.
What I want to find out:
I want to find out is what doctors are really considering dangerous and what the risks are that are involved from texting.
AFTER:
What I found out after reading the article:
After reading this article, I found out that a lot of people have gotten hurt, seriously injured, and even died from not paying attention to their surroundings while texting.
My feelings towards my texting habits do not change after reading this. I know when I text to pay attention to what is going on around me and to only text when I am sitting on the train or when I am standing idle. Texting keeps conversations short as well as private.

What I knew before I read:
Before I read the article, "Election 2008-The Issues", I had already known that the election was being held in November of 2008. I also knew numerous issues that are being mentioned between Obama and McCain which are the economic situation, war, and other ideas such as abortion and healthcare options.
What I want to find out:
I want to find out what candidate is fighting for which issue, as well as how the elction is going to effect me in the future.

After reading the article I have found out that the war in Iraq has costed the nation $550 billion dollars and is a big contribution to the nations ten trillion dollar debt.

Week Four Assigment
Narrative...
Tuesday through Friday are the most hetic days of my life. To take a car, then a train, and finally a subway to get to school is more than any other student does!
To start my morning, I have to drive my car about five miles to the Ronkonkoma train station, try to find a parking spot (which is not easy at 6:15 in the morning), and walk up and around the platforms to get to the train. Of course at 6am, all the fancy business men and women are standing and waiting for the train too, so finding a seat is very difficult. The train ride on the Long Island Railroad is nothing more than flattening my butt for an hour and a half. I usually go on with my iPod in one hand, and my phone in another; and if your lucky, I would do some homework too.
It is like a madhouse trying to get off the train. Everyone and their briefcases, pocketbooks, and art portfolios, like myself, are trying to fit through the very narrow aisle out into Penn Station. Up the stairs everyone goes into the subway vestibule. Same ole routine for everyone, step up, slide your Metrocard, finagle your bag through the gate, and step like a can of sardines into the subway car. The longest fifteen minutes of my life are on that subway. Hitting people with my portfolio in the legs, both on and off the subway isnt the best way to really start my day. Seeing 59th Ave, Columbus Circle, now its only beginning.

Week Three Assignment
The game of baseball is very easy to follow, leading the ideas to form the sport of softball. Although many of the components of baseball such as throwing, catching, and hitting are the same in softball, there are also numerous differences. First difference is that baseball is predominately a male sport, while softball may be a co-ed sport outside of the high school and college atmosphere. Softball players use a twelve inch, neon yellow ball, while those playing baseball use roughly a nine inch, solid white ball. The base paths are also different in softball versus baseball. Girls have to run only sixty feet while boys have to run an extra thirty feet, leading them to run a total of 90 feet from each bag. Lastly, girls use bats of different materials like composite and/or aluminum. Baseball players use wooded bats, which are mandatory due to the size of the ball.Softball Baseball Similarities

Those living on the Texas coastline may experience near death situations if they do not obey orders to leave before Hurrican Ike arrives.

Some strategies I am doing to understand the article is printing out the article itself and highlighting/underlining the main ideas and makes me concentrate more on what the article is actually written about not getting caught up in other things.. After that, I read the whole article again so it makes sense. I also used the five w's (and one H =] ) to determine all the facts.

When: Thursday, September 3rd

Given a warning prior to the storm, there is no reason why anyone should have been living in a Category 2 storm. My Reading Styles
Hi Professor Deforest!
As a part of this class, you are trying to figure out each students reading and writing style. Unlike most college students that are able to write down and understand notes from a lecture, I need to have visual aid. I learn well from diagrams and well-organized graphs such as this example:

Teachers that also write notes on the blackboard as well as interact with their students is the best way I learn. Bonding with your students is also a very important key for being a teacher. Involvement and practical situations that apply to my learning abilities help me a lot.
Honestly, I do not think I have poor reading skills; it is just when then material that is presented to me is not what I enjoy to read, my concentration is poor, I began to not understand the ideas, and I can't understand what is important and not important. Concentration at home is tough for me, too. I have three younger sisters, ages 15, 7, and 4, so it is hard for me to understand the text when my sister is jabber-jawing about how her day at school was. I have a lot of other homework, or I did in high school, and seemed to do the work I enjoyed more than what needed to get done. Instead of reading an English book for 3 hours, I would concentrate on an art project for the 3 hours. I also can't read a book within a week like my teacher in high school expected me to do. I need to sit and read a book slowly so i can truly understand what I am reading.
