Although marriages may be defined as “the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc” according to dictionary.com, the definition may be a bit altered now. Marriages in today’s age are much different from those of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many vows presented in the 1800’s were stated that the wife were to “Obey, Honor, and Respect” as the control of a woman is replaced from her father to her husband. With these vows, a woman would always be dependent on her husband, and coincidently there was no divorce rate. Many wives were to be a so called house-wife, to clean, cook, and fulfill their husband’s needs, work outside of the home was not necessary. In certain religions and races, some marriages may have been arranged, in which the wives do not meet their husbands until the day of their wedding.
Although, in the past, inter-racial and homosexual marriages were not accepted, at all, society has allowed for both to occur. Aside from those two examples, marriages presently have allowed for the woman to be employed, sometimes being paid higher that a man, as well as being able to have the same career as a man such as a lawyer, or doctor. With the woman and man both being part of the work place, it puts a very large strain upon the marriage, which has caused the divorce rate to sky-rocket.
